Independent media have come under all sorts of attack by the establishment which doesn’t want us to tell you the truth or strategies to make things better. There are smear attacks and criminalization, online censorship through the elimination of Net Neutrality, as well as online revenue defunding schemes you certainly have heard about. Let’s spend a few minutes on this issue. I’ll mostly let two well-known youtubers do the talking.

Something David Pakman doesn’t mention here is the trouble that printed media are in, including online “printed” media like Beanstock’s World which you are currently reading. We have never even had Youtube advertisement dollars or such to boost us, and the ads you see on my site earn money for WordPress.com in exchange of hosting my site for free. In this day and age when fewer people are reading, and more and more people are watching videos, it’s really hard to gain financially from the work a writer like I puts in. Perhaps you recall my sharing the calls for help from Truthout and Counterpunch last year when they were heavily struggling in their funding campaigns, probably because so many of us had given to the Bernie campaign and were beginning to find our wallets devoid of cash.
As for the word “progressive” that Pakman throws around in his video, I stay away from such labels since they have been played with and redefined so much that, in many people’s minds, they often stand for their exact opposite. As I have pointed out before, we all have both conservative and progressive urges within us. We all want to keep what’s good and change what’s bad. That’s just human. So, to label someone as progressive or conservative, or to self-identify that way, is pretty misleading. It also tends to lead away from the issues, so that we end up quarreling over labels rather than trying to come to an understanding on important issues, like how to make a living or survive health crises, and how our politicians and government – bought up by Big Money interests – are failing us on such vital matters.
So much for divisive labels. Let’s return to the topic of struggling independent media. Perhaps you didn’t know this, but I also opened a Patreon account, so that people can donate to support me in my efforts. It’s much smaller than David Pakman’s, as you can see. I, too, am hard pressed; and the day may take forever to arrive on which I can afford to do my research and writing full time during regular hours rather than on off hours from pointless breadwinning jobs or job searches.
The point of it all is: we, the 99% (or 80-90%?) must make change happen — and independent media are a critical part of this. Some of us have time and talent but no money. Some of us have no time but a little money to spare. Some of us have nothing or a lot. And some of us have more than we think. Just imagine how much money so many of us waste on corporate media with things like oversized cable TV packages, commercial streaming services, bought DVD collections, and such. By just saving on that end, many of us could free up a few bucks for independent media and the citizen journalism we still don’t have enough of, and which is coming under increasing attack from the establishment.
Here is Jimmy Dore making an appeal last year to save his show. We all must stick together and help each other as necessary to change our Hell on Earth into Heaven on Earth. We have the resources. We only need to educate ourselves and each other to understand the flaws of our current system, see the vision of the much better future we can create, understand the way forward, and act accordingly:

Ending Note: It takes me at least 100 hours a month to research and write for this site and work on my book. Please share links to these articles or help in other ways. Thanks. Only together can we change this messed-up world. 🙂
