Economics: Shorter Work Hours vs UBI

Richard Wolff gives lots of awesome speeches and explanations, but sometimes he also skips over vital points like probably all of us. Here is one such case:

Economic Update: Beyond Universal Basic Income
Democracy At Work

Comment: Richard Wolff is probably right that reduced full-time workweek hours could be used less well by sociopathic demagogues than a UBI to divide people because the current weird ideology of our right to live deriving exclusively from us working paid jobs would continue as before. No shaking of the boat. There would be less risk of misleading people into thinking that they work shabby jobs and pay painful taxes only to keep lazy other people from having to work (while always overlooking that this is exactly what we are doing in the current system, although not really for under-supplied poor people who get very little help, but rather for all those super-rich people who own most of what can be owned and swim in a huge stream of money flow they do NOT earn by work).  Continue reading “Economics: Shorter Work Hours vs UBI”

Not to overlook: The commentaries on the video clips are worth reading and discussing.

Note: Please share, so more of us will catch this video compilation that took a lot of time searching and previewing to make — a labor of love so that people strapped for time won’t miss those worthwhile videos. Another reason to share: some folks aren’t good at finding worthwhile videos on the Internet, instead watching silly videos or the establishments’ cable “news”.

  1. AOC (Money in Politics, Medicare for All)
  2. Financially Gouged American Lives
  3. Automation in Capitalism

Video Weekend 07-14-2018 (18 videos)

This weekend’s online video compilation, sporting many stars (including several non-regulars) like Susan George, Ralph Nader, Abby Martin, Noam Chomsky, Jimmy Dore, Richard Eskow, The Rational National, Jesse Ventura, Brigida Santos, Richard Wolff, Jamarl Thomas, and Thom Hartmann, ranges from news on the oligarchic “Dem” establishment vote-splitting its own base, through deep system analyses, exposure of corruption, media manipulation, economic “free market” reality, political theater, class war, immigration, and automation to enlightened political conversations and spiffy political humor. (Warning: so many good videos piled up this week that I am planning for a Part B tomorrow). Invitation: sign up for notifications from this site as a rich source for eye-opening and ideas-spawning videos and articles.

I. System Analysis

Global Debt Slavery: The people worldwide has been colonized by the rich corporatists (A.K.A. Neocons/Neoliberals / robber billionaires and their millionaire minions):

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for the title: “Susan George on Neoliberalism“)

Corporate-state elections:

Prophet Ralph Nader’s stunning precognition in 2015:

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for the title: “The Empire Files: Ralph Nader & Abby Martin on the Corporate Elections“)

Noam Chomski Interview on a broad range of issues:

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for the title: “PRIMO NUTMEG #144: Noam Chomsky“)

Note: The one thing on which I definitely disagree with him is that “the weight of evidence” suggests that Assad launched chemical attacks. Here, Chomski may have fallen victim to the widespread lies dispersed throughout all the major media outlets. It is simply illogical for Assad to shoot himself into his foot that way (prompting hostilities from super powers like the U.S.), even more so when he is already winning anyway. And that the White Helmets which parade through our media as a kind of Middle Eastern Red Cross are actually a branch of the islamist terrorists, one that specializes in creating fake news (such as those alleged chemical attacks), is pretty well documented by now.

II. Corruptitians

Self-declared gods blowing up smoke each other’s a’s while they are screwing us over:

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for Jimmy Dore and the title: “Swamp Creature Scott Pruitt Resigns From EPA“)

“Democratic” Party establishment working to split its own “Democratic” Party vote to avoid progressive Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from winning the election for Congress. Remember how they were gaslighting and voter-shaming us in 2016 (and 2000), blaming those of us who want policies for the people and end the establishment oligarchy for allegedly having gotten us G.W. Bush and Donald Trump? Well, while all this was total bogus in an electoral system so heavily rigged, they sure seem to not hesitate to use the sppiler effect to protect their bribe-paying donors from their own voter base:

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for The Rational National and the title: “Joe Crowley Stays On The Ballot As 3rd-Party Challenge To Ocasio-Cortez“)

III. Systemic Corruption

Jesse Ventura, Brigida Santos, and Richard Wolff discuss the erosion of workers’ rights in America and how our corporatist debt-based economy with lots of welfare for the rich and lots of squeezing for the rest of us leads to ever greater inequality.

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for the title: “Workers’ Rights & Richard Wolff“)

IV. Media Manipulation

Controlling the people with lies and silencing. Jesse Ventura and Brigida Santos discuss Operation Mockingbird and how America’s most powerful news outlets have been working with the CIA for decades to plant false stories and mislead the public:

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for Jesse Ventura, Brigida Santos, and the title: “Operation Mockingbird & John Barbour“)

U.S.A. = Propaganda State :

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for Jamarl Thomas and the title: “ALERT: U.S. Funded “Ministry Of Truth” Is Lying On Glen Greenwald; Legally Spreading Propaganda To U“)

V. Economic Reality

Economic reality of protectionism, government subsidies, and oh-so free trade that never was or likely will be:

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for the title: “The deceptive promise of free trade | DW Documentary“)

Our Power Elite’s Corrupt Economy and Political Theater (very insightful speech!):

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for Richard D. Wolff and the title: “Global Capitalism: Immigration & Trade War [July 2018] “)

Note: Most important point (which you hear from me again and again, as well) around 33:01 min in, starting with an astute audience comment and continuing with Wolff’s well-put response. And at 40:34 min, he goes over our U.S. experience with it.

Toxic economy:

A suitable Pruit Epitaph: Poison for Profit. The rich have absolutely no consideration for us.

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for Thom Hartmann and the title: “How the Morbidly Rich are Literally Poisoning the Working Class for Profit!“)

VI. Class War

The U.S. Class War (incl. Mortgage Crisis) explained by Richard Wolff:

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for the title: “How Class Works – by Richard Wolff“)

I’d like to add that, as I calculated and explained before, about half of the income created by all our work (plus the machines and previously made infrastructure and inventions) goes to the small group of the very rich; and if we simply redirected it to us all by taxing excessive income and wealth, we would all have good lives (except in cases of untreatable health crises and such, which we could then also better fight though, by the way).

VII. Immigration

Some good points made on our immigration situation:

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for Jimmy Dore and the title: ““We Don’t Want Mexicans” Say Young Trump Supporter“)

The running for your life part of Hispanic immigration to the U.S. (the oligarchy hurts people everywhere — and too many dupes among us still believe this to be ethical and for our safety):

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for Sana Saeed and the title: “How U.S. Involvement In Central America Led To a Border Crisis| AJ+“)

VIII. Automation (quick idea)

Automation could be a good rather than bad thing if handled correctly. Besides Social Security for All as a financial safety cushion and Federal Job Programs (to fund important tasks the private market does not), an additional (not alternative, but additional) way is a shorter work week:

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for the title: “The Divide: Why You Should Work Less – And How It Could Save The Planet“)

IX. Political Psychology

Culture is only part of our believes and push-buttons. A lot is in-born. We find it among our closest relatives in the wild:

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for the title: “The surprising science of alpha males | Frans de Waal“)

X. Political Conversation

Good conversation comparing the Democratic and Republican gangs… pardon me… “parties” and how to solve our problems. Oh, look at the front picture: more alpha chimps!

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for Jimmy Dore, Richard Eskow, and the title: “Who’s More Corrupt, Democrats Or Republicans?“)

XI. Political Humor

Neat, humorous conversation on immigration, nativism, elite-privilege, election integrity, people striving to make our country being smeared as extremists and the denied the right to do so when they didn’t pick the right soil to be born on…:

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for Jimmy Dore, Richard Eskow, and the title: “Democrats Are Plotting A “Coup”! Says Tucker Carlson”)

The continuation of the conversation (also has good moments): Should A Tolerant Society Tolerate Intolerance?

Note: Keep your eyes peeled for tomorrow’s Part B (at least 3 or 4 more videos).

A Moving Farewell from Stephen Hawking (short)

Last March, one of our most amazing scientists died after miraculously battling the crippling and lethal Lou Gehrig’s disease for most of his life. Through sheer force of will, it seems, Hawking managed to survive for many decades a horrible disease that normally kills in a few years, and he still managed to maintain an illustrious position in science while being helplessly tied to a wheelchair and hardly able to move. Whenever I think “mind over body” I think of Stephen Hawking. He is mostly known for his famous work in theoretical physics, and to some degree for his atheism (so much for the health miracles alleged to result from prayers and religious faith), but he was also quite aware of humanity’s socio-economic problems, and before he died left us with a moving statement, a swan song so to speak:

If machines produce everything we need, the outcome will depend on how things are distributed. Everyone can enjoy a life of luxurious leisure if the machine-produced wealth is shared, or most people can end up miserably poor if the machine-owners successfully lobby against wealth redistribution. So far, the trend seems to be toward the second option, with technology driving ever-increasing inequality.”

I agree with him that machines won’t bring about the economic robot apocalypse. Greedy humans will, if we don’t stop them. Economic inequality will continue to skyrocket as more and more jobs become automated and the rich owners of the robots and software systems refuse to share their fast-growing wealth. Remember: the “owners” neither invent nor build the robots and pieces of software that drive us out of our jobs without any compensation. We do. And who keeps the system running that shafts us? We do.

Time for us to rethink what we do.

By the way, I just managed to squeeze in some time to visit The Revolution Continues. So much new good stuff has accumulated since my last visit, it’d take too long to list it all. You may want to pay a visit yourself. 😉

Video Weekend 05-06-2018 (12 videos)

A full dozen world view improving videos for the weekend. I apologize for not getting this out before Sunday this time. Having to do these things in my scarce spare time can cause delays. Anyway, the topics range from mentality for change, economy, democracy, our changing world, corrupt politics, imperialism, and disenfranchisement, to a visionary look at our present and future. Jimmy Dore’s team took the prize of making no less than five of this weekend’s featured videos. Other stars: Chris Hedges, Richard Wolff, Jesse Vetura, Jamarl Thomas, Frances Moore Lappé, and a bunch of monkeys that were not subjected to our mass media propaganda and thus behave more human than some of us…

I. Mentality for Change

Karl Marx’s hope to save democracy:

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for the title: “Economic Update: The Contributions of Karl Marx (Part I)”)

Exactly 200 years ago from yesterday, Karl Marx was born, a man who fell in love with the American and French Revolution and dedicated his life to rescuing their goals from a growing plutocracy. In the intervening two centuries, the plutocracy has spared no effort to demonize him. Today, as we begin to wake up to the evils of plutocratic rule, the time is ripe to take a fresh look at this perhaps most influential man in history.

II. Economy

Emplyee-Employer-War, No Recovery, Evictions over Chicken Feed, etc.:

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for the title: “Economic Update: Employees VS Employers — Endless Tensions”)

Note: The fact that in Germany employees have representatives at companies’ boards of governors resulted in German companies not laying off their workers during the big 2008 crash. Instead, they agreed with their workers to reduce pay and work hours until sales would rise again. So, people didn’t lose their jobs and companies didn’t lose their trained workers. As soon as sales rose again, they could simply increase the work hours and pay again and be instantly ready for recovered business opportunities.

III. Democracy

The fight for democracy:

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for the title: “The Struggle to Wrest Back Control of Our Democracy with Frances Moore Lappé”)

Comment: Indeed, for so many brainwashed people, economic democracy is completely off the table, out of sight and out of mind, replaced by a quasi-religious worship of a so-called “free” market (which is anything but free nor creates anything even close to freedom except for a few despots… or else it is absurdly viewed as being natural rather than the creation of selfish thugs that lived in the past and paved the way for today’s dungheap society.

Good question asked by this lady: What is freedom when you can talk but not be heard? — This is precisely why I started Beanstock’s World, why anyone with a sensible story to tell or argument to make can send me an article I will post, and why all of us should spread the word about sites like this to our friends and family.

Note: Really interesting idea for public campaign financing (AKA getting money out of politics): vouchers (each voter gets 4 publicly financed vouchers worth $25 he or she can give to the candidates of their choice).

Here, by the way, you can watch the above-mentioned video footing about monkeys wanting justice:

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for the title: “Capuchin monkey fights for equal rights – Inside the Animal Mind: Episode 3 – BBC Two”)

Joke: Well, if I were still caught in the “good cop/bad cop” twin-party mentality I might jeeringly say that chimps are clearly not Republicans (despite the grinning chimp appearance of Reagan and G.W. Bush…), referring thereby to that group of well-off don’t-take-from-me-to-share-with-the-less-fortunate traditional Republican voters I described, side by side with several others, in my recent article Allies Against Democracy. ;-P

IV. The Changing World

Automation, threat or opportunity?

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for the title: “The Future of Work | SingularityU Germany Summit 2017”)

Best parts: 00:30–2:00 & 24:05–25:30

V. Corrupt Politics

The Dempublican twin-gang smuggles thugs into public office and gang member was caught admitting it:

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for the title: “CAUGHT! Leaked Audio Reveals Democrats Cheating Progressives Again”)

Face of the political elite:

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for the title: “Hillary Has New Excuse On Why She Lost – Capitalism!”)

Really good discussion of our corrupt political elites:

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for the title: “Nancy Pelosi Admits She’s Ok With Cheating Progressives”)

The political ping pong of pretending we have only two voting choices keeps getting played on us by the establishment:

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for the title: “Democrats Lose Ground With Millennials – New Poll Reveals”)

VI. Imperialism

Our awful imperialist media supporting murderous governments:

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for the title: “NY Times Jaw Dropping Biased Reporting On Israel”)

VII. Disenfranchisement

Citizenship without a right to vote:

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for the title: “Puerto Rico, Forgotten Territories & Jen Briney”)

VIII. Vision

The Meaning of freedom. I marked this video from last September back then to share here, but it seems that it fell through the cracks. In the wake of last fall’s Convergence Conference, Jamarl made very important points which haven’t become outdated and won’t for many years to come. So, here they are:

(Note: if the video linked above gets deleted, you may search the Internet for the title: “After Nick Brana’s Draft Sander’s Convergence – Problems The Soft Left Must Confront”)

Undeniably true: People should have healthcare, they shoud have education, and they should have an income. Society shouldn’t be hostile to what it means to be human.
